Dennis and his associates were an absolutely impressive team of people. We were blindsided by a family member trying to seek custody of our child after my significant other had a horrifying incident. Mr. Slate and his team were always on hand in the drop of a hat to help us through this process. When the day of court finally came, it was the most impressive thing I have ever seen someone do. Mr. Slate is absolutely worth every single penny. He is the hardest working individual I have ever met and his scope of knowledge is uncanny. He is no nonsense and very blunt, but if you do what he says and follow his instructions he will absolutely get the job done. We can not thank him enough and if you ever need a lawyer for family law there is no one in Houston that can match his caliber.

I dismissed by agreement my 1st attorney who was a family friend because he was not brazen enough to stand up for my rights as a father and more importantly what needed to be done to protect my son from his own narcissistic psycho mother, step sister and her parents. Dennis represented me in my custody case. My sons mother tried to take me to court to have all my rights and visitation taken away. Dennis and his staff fought for me and in the end I got even more time with my son without even going to trial. Originally I could only see my son every other weekend. Now I get to see him every day except for every other weekend. I can't thank him and his staff enough. If you want an attorney who knows the laws and is a pit bull in the court room then Dennis is your man.

I'm really not sure what goes on at this office, but when I called to ask for a consultation, all I was able to get from the phone call was hostility. I understand that I don't know the legalities behind everything, because I'm not a LAWYER. But getting an answer questioned from these people in order to know if I have a case or not was like herding cats. Instead, I guess they prefer getting you into the office to charge you per question. Why would I file suit unless I know I have a case?

I hired Mr. Slate as my divorce attorney in Aug 2016. He seemed to have my best interest when i hired him, but i learned 1.5 years later that he just wasn’t interested in achieving any results nor helping me get my divorce settled. Mind you, the only thing my ex and i we’re fighting over, was child support. Yes my ex kept hiding or not turning in paperwork but all of my decisions to keep pushing things back, came from my attorney, Mr. slate. In the end, when i decided to get other counsel, Mr. slate sends me an email stating how he was “just being nice to me and should’ve charged me $10k, instead of the $8k that he did!” Horrible right? Yea! So beware of this attorney, if you don’t want to be drug along or you want a lawyer that doesn’t have a high case load and will treat your case as a priority, even after paying $8k!

My new counsel has been on my case for a little over a month and my divorce will be finalized in less then a month. I spent more money again but at least, the divorce is finalized! Oh and i got the amount i wanted in child support too! Crazy! Smh

I called several attorneys today and only ONE of them was rude and hung up on me and they were Slate and Associates.

I asked if they offered free consultations and they advised me that they did not, so I asked how much was the retainer to hire them, I was then informed that I would hove to pay for a consultation to get a qoute for a retainer ?!?!?!

SERIOUSLY ?!?!?! Are these people hurting for money that bad that they charge you to tell you how much they are going to charge you !?!?!

Like I said, I called SEVERAL attorneys this morning (over 15) and only these people chose to act in this manner.

I highly advise to avoid these money hungry bottom feeders.

Mr. Slate is very competent. I am sure of that. He is also very busy. Much of his work is handled by his assistants which is normal and was fine by me. My divorce took 10 months. There were multiple assets involved and so I expected it to take some time. But I had already done all the leg work for discovery....providing all the deeds/closings/documents that were needed promptly so I didn't think it would take this long. Granted we were also at the mercy of my ex's attorney who was not nearly as capable.

I don't feel the mediation was handled well. My ex and his attorney were not prepared and my ex was just too emotional to deal with making a decision under the pressure the attorneys were putting on him. My ex ended up walking out on the negotiations and so later I basically sat my ex down and we hashed out the mediated settlement ourselves. In hindsight I recommend trying to get an agreement with your ex on your own before going to mediation to take the pressure off.

I just wish my attorney had reviewed the agreement closer before sending it to the judge. We wasted two months fixing one provision that the attorney had basically knew wouldn't pass muster with the judge. At one point I really felt like I was never going to be granted my divorce. This is my only contention....this part should have been handled with more care.

Otherwise, Mr. Slate did just what he said he would. He is smart and tough. I appreciate his work.....but let me say this Ryann is the best!

In short, I don’t believe you can find a better qualified or more caring attorney in family law. I know we couldn’t.

We were initially referred to Dennis because there were both civil and criminal components to our case. Dennis Slate is able to handle both. Our case spanned over 5 years. I don’t know if that is typical or not, but I do know that we were partially at fault for waiting too long to go on the offensive. (This was when we chose to hire Dennis.) The other reason it took so long was that we had the misfortune of having an opponent with newly acquired resources who was able to delay, delay, delay by outspending us 3-1.

Dennis will be forthright with you about where you stand, what you can expect and what you may have already done that could hurt your prospects in the family court system. He’s nobody’s fool and is wise to the legal and psychological maneuvers a parent set on alienation will pull. Time is not your friend in family law matters. Every day that you’re away from your children is a day you don’t get back, no matter who ultimately “wins”.

It has taken a long time to think about what to write in this review. I write reviews all the time – hotels, shopping, etc. Your relationship with your lawyer is more intimate and longer than you’ll expect. Dennis will be your voice and your representative in what is a very complex system.

It’s impossible to convey in an online review the depth of our gratitude to Dennis Slate and his entire firm for the manner in which they handled our case. I was referred to Dennis from a military friend of mine and I was impressed from the start. Dennis was smart, hard working, and very knowledgeable on all aspects of law practice in Houston. My 1 year old daughter was being withheld from me, without cause or any order after I ended a relationship with her mom. I went in for a consultation and explained all of the issues that I believed were in play to Dennis and he was very upfront and honest with me and gave me detailed guidance how to best achieve my goals. Within 3 weeks we had our Initial court setting, and without a hearing I left court with temp court order making me and the respondent Joint Managing Conservators with all the rights subject to the agreement of the other parent. An initial final trial was set for 6 months later. What should have been a fairly straight forward child custody lawsuit turned into the one of the hardest things I have ever had to deal with in my life. All because of the respondents actions. My daughter was withheld again for around a month without cause forcing a enforcement action and a contempt finding in Jan 2017. From there forward I watched while the other party hired and fired lawyer after lawyer. There were so many complicated legal issues due to this and Dennis and his entire team were on top of every single one. There was lots of personal stress and emotions that I dealt with due to this lawsuit but the one thing I NEVER EVER had to worry about was my legal team. Dennis and his entire team were always very straight forward and up front with me. They protected me and my interests in every way possible. I found myself the target of a false CPS allegation and knew I needed a lawyer to help me clear my name and ensure my relationship with my children. Last fall, my husband and I found ourselves in the middle of a child custody case concerning our two granddaughters. Numerous parties were involved in the dispute, including CPS and the courts, and we had extreme concerns for the girls’ futures. Our granddaughters were living in different households, and the initial legal representation we hired was not up to the demanding task of reuniting the children. Knowing we had a huge mess on our hands, my husband contacted a trusted friend who was familiar with the Harris County court system. Without hesitation, he responded, “Dennis Slate is him name, you need to call him.” This turned out to be the best advice that we had received in a long time.

Dennis Slate… Personable? Not so much. Knows family, the law, the system, and all other related entities? Absolutely. Dennis is all business with an expertise and tenacity that were essential to the successful outcome of our case. I will not be retaining them to take my case. I do feel after paying $75 for a consultation that I'm entitled to a review. I called last week and set up an appointment for Wednesday because I work on every other weekday, every week. When I got to the office I was not warmly greeted but instead drilled with questions immediately and told my appointment was set for Monday, not today. I explained that had to be a mistake. The receptionist argued with me about the name on the paperwork vs. The name they had for the appointment. I go by my middle name. She proceeds to take my $75 and instructs me to wait. I asked if if would be able to see someone today and she said yes. I should have run out as soon as they made the mistake with my appointment date. I could have saved myself money and stress.

They don't call you to confirm your appointment the day before. They don't email you to confirm the appointment date. They don't contact you if you miss an appointment. I asked and she said they just make a note that you didn't show up. Wow. Again I should have just left then.

The receptionist comes over to me and tells me I have to reschedule because the lawyer I chose to see, Ms. Simms, does not take client visits on Wednesdays. I asked, Why would you take my money then? She stated that was her mistake. I asked how we could fix it since the only day during the week I am available is Wednesday. She said she didn't know. Then another lawyer in their firm said she would speak with me about my case for the $75, even though she normally charges more. I said Okay.

Her name was Shailey Gupta-Brietzke. She looked over my documents that I brought in. My husband and I have been separated for over 7 years. We have 1 daughter together and no property or shared debts what so ever. I just need a divorce and custody of my child since he has little or nothing to do with her anyway and is a drug addict and has been to jail several times. Shailey told me I was just "throwing out my trump cards" and no judge that she knew of would grant me sole custody. She did not ask any additional questions about my ex. She gave me a best case scenario that He would rights to every summer, spring, traditional joint custody. Not what I wanted to hear, but I do understand sometimes these things are true and hard to swallow. She said because we already had a custody order in place from when we agreed on child support in 2011 we would have to do the divorce and modification of the visitation separately and that would take 2 retainer fees! Which for the least expensive lawyer there would be $6000. I was in tears my this point. I asked if she could check our current custody arrangement to see the exact wording of what we had in place now. Shailey acted put out that she had to go into another room and "get her laptop to pull this up" even though she had never seen a custody order that was not the joint standard "in my 9 years of practice" Just like a doctor should have good bedside manner with their patient, a lawyer dealing in family law should have the same candor in dealing with highly sensitive cases. I can tell you Shailey does not. She could have cared less that I paid $75 and made me feel like I inconvenienced her to go look up the details of my case! Then, she saw that the order we had in place WAS indeed different than what she was used to seeing! Well I'm glad I could show you something new in your 9 years of practice today! She talked fast seemed in a rush to get me out of there from the minute I sat down. I would not recommend this lawyer nor can I recommend anyone else there after how I was treated, but I did get some possibly useful info about my case, although it took some begging, tears, and frustration to get there.

Hummm... Where to begin? So I needed a Divorce Attorney. I selected, Dannielle Simms, from the Law office of Dennis M. Slate's law firm. My initial phone conversation was with Dennis Slate, and he assured me that everyone in the office would work with me on my case... This happened. He and another attorney showed up to court at different times. The legal secretary was "johnny-on-the-spot" anytime I need quick answers or was dropping off or picking up documents. The paralegal, when Dannielle was not available, always knew the answers regarding my case.

Now, Dannielle Simms, wow... Just wow... I hired Dennis Slate because my wife had such success with him in her custody case last year against her ex-husband. When I first met with Dennis, we talked about how I could modify my situation with my daughters to officially increase their time with my side of their family. I first met Dennis Slate in 2013 after he was highly recommended to me by a close friend. Dennis and Melissa are without any question two of the worse attorneys I have ever dealt with. They were never prepared when arriving to court, they provided false legal advise, and through their own actions place me at greater financial risk without every explaining to me the risk. Dennis told me in in very clear terms that one condition existed while in his office, then when we went to court it was determined to be completely false because of what language he and his staff wrote in my decree. Had I not hired anyone, I could have done no worse than what he allowed to occur through his poor representation and by not being prepared or understand the case at all. On top of their extremely poor work, they will also nickle and dime you for every penny they can get. I was even invoiced for a US stamp ($1.00) for that! If you ever want an attorney who is more concerned with how they can get more money out of you and who cares less about your case, this is your guy..... I would NEVER recommend anyone hire this pathetic excuse for a legal professional......and I use that term loosely.
