Dedicated and hard working for the rule of law and accountability. They are ombudsmen for the criminal justice system—policing the police, courts, jails, and others with a vested interest in outcomes. The PD is the only reason we have exercisable rights—to be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, to remain silent, to have counsel, trial by jury, and the right to suppression of illegally obtained evidence. As neofascist policies mount in this country there is no entity more important to a free and open society. Mess with the PD at your personal peril.

Good for these people for doing the work that they do. I, after committing my first legal infraction, was too timid to go with them, but everyone should, regardless of the crime you commit, have representation in court to put your best interests forward. Also, everyone should remember:

When talking with cops, say nothing. Do nothing. Admit nothing, and hint to nothing. Simply ask them if you are being detained? If they reply no, then say that you are free to go. Never say anything to a cop without a lawyer present.
