I was in your shoes a couple of months ago, I was researching for a Patent attorney and came across Justin. I realized that he has recently passed the bar, however, when I saw that he also was listed as a registered patent attorney, I figured that it was worth talking with him. I also understand what is like starting a new business and wanted to give him an opportunity for us to be successful.
After meeting him and grilling him, I was impressed that he went back to law school to become a patent attorney, unlike attorneys that have tried many different avenues.
He has been working hard on my patent application and we have filed, now starts the wait and see period…
A couple of things about Justin, he took the time and effort to completely understand my invention, which was not a device that he had experience dealing with. Additionally, he spent a Saturday morning with me when I was testing my first prototype and even offered some suggestions on how to improve it. His background in mechanical engineering definitely is helpful with writing the patent application.
Since it is your invention, he does expect you to be an active participant in reviewing the document to ensure that he has captured everything that the invention is about. I have been very active in making comments/changes during this process and Justin has been very understanding. He has questioned some of my points and provided guidance on the laws.
I have spent time reading a number of patent applications, so I would understand what they consist of and have some knowledge about what they should contain, including the claim section which appears to be an important part of the application.
The product that Justin has developed, I feel addresses all of these areas. Keep in mind that you want to ask for more than you think and let the Patent Examiner reject some of the claims on the first review.
Be aware that it is a very time consuming process to try and get a patent so be ready for the process to drag out after you file.
To wrap it up, would I hire Justin again? Yes, he has been responsive to me and has given the appropriate attention to me and my invention. I already have a couple of other inventions that I would like to start the process again if I can make some additional income from this one.
Good luck with your invention.
