After being an active cyclist for close to 30 years it finally happened to me. I was struck by an automobile, by a driver with no insurance who had run a stop sign. I was fortunate that my injuries were not worse, very lucky. I was familiar with attorney Bill Shirer after racing in the Texas State road race a few years ago, I'd actually kept his card and literature in case I needed representation. I hired Mr. Shirer to negotiate a claim against the United States Postal Service. A USPS driver pulled his truck out of a side street and into my cycling group's line of travel. Two of us collided with the truck, our bicycles were totaled and I incurred significant injury that required a hospital stay and rehabilitation. The USPS is "self-insured" and has their own rules regarding liability claims. Mr. Shirer not only successfully navigated the USPS system but also negotiated with my health insurance company to reduce their reimbursement and lobbied my auto insurance carrier to pay the Personal Injury Protection that I was due. His knowledge and efforts resulted in the very satisfactory compensation of my claim. Furthermore, had I wanted to, Mr. Shirer would have had no problem taking the USPS to court.

Until my bicycle accident I had no idea how complicated and stressful it could be just to get the urgent medical care I needed . The day after my injury (after bring released from the ER) I had severe chest pains and breathing difficulty . I called my doctors office , where I have been a patient for over 30 yrs , but was told they could not see me as a third party insurance was involved.
