About 15 years ago I had a lot of financial problems. I moved to DelRay Bch. I felt that the movers were charging me too much and that they lost some items. I wrote a check to them with insufficient funds. The same thing happened with another mover in Florida and again I did the same thing. It has been a nightmare for my family and myself for all this time. Especially because the love of my life, my son and his fiancé live in Florida. Marc and Heidi defended me in a case of Battery on a Police Officer and Resisting with Violence. With 3 sworn officers willing to testify that they witnessed both felonies, the case did not look good for us and I was facing up to 10 years in prison.

While Perlet-Shiner negotiated a deal that would have seen all charges dropped, with no admission of guilt, I made their jobs that much more difficult by demanding the chance to clear my name and reputation in Court.

Even after more than two years, Mr. Shiner and Ms. Perlet arrived in court FULLY prepared. Their grasp of the events, their recollection of prior statements by the officers and their knowledge of the law were simply stellar.

I will give the entire accounting of my experience and why after I finish with my probation. Just finished my 9th probation meeting and am eligible for early termination. Hopefully Rob does his job as I paid him $10,000.00 dollars to do it right. This time, we shall see what happens. He was a prosecuting DA and knows all the loop holes. Having to deal with a serious felony charge terrified me. I needed more than ambulance chasers to defend me. I interviewed three highly recommended, reputable law firms. I felt more comfortable with Marc Shiner. The initial interview lasted most of the afternoon - because Marc wanted to know everything about me - the facts of the charges were pretty clear. It’s the phone call everyone dreads. The 3 a.m. wakeup call. You wake up startled, and then you hear this, “Ma’am, this is the Sheriff's department. We have your husband in custody, for trafficking in drugs. He’s facing 65 years. You need to get a lawyer.” My wife, frantic, desperately, with all her soul, cries out a silent prayer to God, asking for help to find a lawyer. She pages through the phone book, and finds Heidi Perlet, and gives her a call at 3:15 a.m. Heidi professionally answers, and talks and counsels my wife for 30 minutes, along with her co-counsel, and husband, Mark. After bonding out of jail, I met with Heidi, and told her all the circumstances of the case against me. She formulated a plan, and I followed it.

When you hire a lawyer, you also need one with professionalism, and long standing relationships with prosecutors and the district attorneys, so you can balance what they want, with what you want. That relationship only comes from experience, and an ability to tacitly negotiate and work, with those with an adversarial position against you. How good is she? Hire her, and you may get the phone call you will always remember and cherish. I did. And it happened at 3:00 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. It’s from Heidi. “Hello—you aren’t going to serve a day in jail. I promise you. They are going to drop the trafficking charges. The case is over. You need to go to pre-trial supervision for 60 days, which is handled by the probation department. Be good for 60 days, and the last charge is dropped. And then we can expunge the case as though it never happened.” After saying to Heidi “thank you, and I love you” I hung up the phone, and softly cried. And then I called my wife, who now got the good phone call I just got.

What happened to those other individuals, in this case? They got sentenced to 35 years, 10 years and 5 years. I got no bars, no jail, no time, no hell. Which do you want?
