Had a horrible experience with Josh and his team. I had my consultation and believed all the lies. Fell into the trap. Once he was paid I could not get ahold of Josh. He sent his associates to my court hearings. It was a new one each time and they were never familiar with the case. Leading up to the final court hearing I had always heard we should have no problem getting what we were asking for. The day of my final court hearing he pulled me into his office and told me I should settle for less and was very rude. He didn’t want to be inconvenienced with a trip to court so he tried to get my ex and I to come to agreement. It was hard to tell who he represented in the end.

I have to come back and edit this post. After my divorce was final and I received the final divorce decree that was recorded there were several errors that were made by Mr. Mathews that he would not consider even attempting to correct. During the divorce proceedings Mr Mathews and the other attorney were to make a few changes to the paper work per the judge instructions however Mr Mathews never allowed me to review the document before he turned it back in to the court. Although I contacted him within the timeframe to do something about it he did not. He also advised me to do illegal things as a remedy for the things I brought to his attention. Now me and my daughter have to live with the negative impacts daily. THIS MAN IS NOT HUMAN AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY BE ONLY CARE ABOUT MAKING MONEY!!!!

Thought that one fee was great but since they had my money there was no need to work anymore than they had to. Maybe if I paid per hour they would work harder. The man, Matthew I think, called me the night before my court appearance and assured everything I was asking was no problem. But that morning when he showed up late not fully dressed he said I was asking too much and I should accept my ex-wifes proposal. Dumbley I accepted but now it makes some much since, he didn't want to come back for another case. He's been paid. I think alot of us disregard review's, why bc every company has them. But at least don't use the plate rate plan. If your fighting for custody and your ex is a bad person flat rate is not good. The only way to win is pay out the butt. It's life. Josh has helped me a couple times and has always been extremely pleasant to work with. He is down to earth and so compassionate. I’ve had a number of times where legal questions have come up and he has been available in a timely manner. Josh knows the inner workings of the court and is excellent in the court room. Paperwork and the legal process is slow. Be patient and try to find happiness in this stressful time. Highly recommended them, but like any attorney with a divorce it is expensive. Pray before jumping into a divorce because even when it is over, the spouse you still have to interact with. Now you have additional rules to govern and kids are shuffled around, where they may have had stability before. Make sure you can handle the reality of having kids part of the time on your own and divorce does not solve your problems, just changes the way you interact with your spouse. Make sure you have exhausted your desire to be with spouse, otherwise it could be extremely expensive. If going to proceed, work with the Matthews group.

This is Jim not Carol but I was awarded a judgement in my Divorce that I was unable to collect. The paralegal was helpful on the phone and we decided on a price. Once the contract arrived for me to sign there was an additional 2500 added and a reminder that there could be more if more hours are required. When calling them they basically said to not worry about what was in the contract but sorry, they need to write what they mean or I won't sign anything. They may be very good, I don't know.

So never going through a divorce I had no clue what to do. I went to Google and looked up different divorce attorneys around the KC area and found The Mathews Group. I sat down and talked to Amber and she was very reassuring and informative. I went ahead and paid the full payment right away and the rest was a breeze. There was difficulty in the divorce but nothing to do with The Mathews Group. Anytime i had a question about the divorce Nicole was always right there to help. Josh as you can imagine is always busy but if you schedule an appointment he would be glad to meet with you. No issues what so ever with the staff. This team made a difficult situation easy and did not create Drama that wasn’t there. Josh was hired to help with my custody case. I explained that is was complicated and that he would have to move quickly. Josh said he send in paperwork, he was never filed as appearance. He was late, he urged me to agree with a change in the already agreed upon custody arrangement and now I am having to go back to court to fight my ex again. I have had all sorts of things filed against me during the case and josh didn't help with any response and we paid him in full and then after the orginal case he wanted more money because he had to show up to court in another county, after I specifically told him that he would have to file first to avoid that. Wasn't the worst lawyer I have ever used, but I definitely feel like I didnt get what i paid for.

No complaints here! I'm divorced and we have everything in writing as we discussed. Thankful for Michelle and her hard work on my case and Mr Mathews for being compassionate during court.

Highly recommend. I have been with the Matthews Group for a custody case for my son and though the case has been rough was no fault of Mr. Matthews or his office. I found this office by googling and calling around and went with them over two years ago. Though my case was settled I have had to rehire them and was happy I could trust to come back to them. Michelle has treated me with respect and as a real person not as a client or a money pit. She hears me when I speak, she responds when I need answers, if she is unsure she gets the answer and calls me back. When I needed to rehire Mr. Matthews they reviewed the case to ensure my case was worthy of a trial and wanted to ensure to me they did not want to take my money if my case was not strong enough at this time. Mr. Matthews saw the other party’s untruths but understood my need for balance of my child for his time with his father and his limits from certain situations and worked with me to ensure the court order made those balances. I have also worked with Devon from time to time, not much but I do enjoy the friendliness of care I receive from her as well. I say care bc I don’t feel that I am getting “service” from this office, I do feel that I am receiving care from the staff and I feel that they care for my son just the same without ever even meeting him.

I had really bad Experience with this lawyer I felt that hi did not defend me or mi rights in court and did not want to help me with some paper work it was a disaster my case and in consequence I end up paying alot of child support..and after I paid all the money they drop the case really sad...I would not recommend this lawyer....and the are really expensive

Josh and his staff helped me through a very difficult time in my life. The beginning was a bit rocky at first (due to the fault of opposing parties), but Josh was extremely helpful, thorough, and supportive throughout my case. If you hire Josh for your divorce you will lose your kids. That simple. He does not care about you. The second my check cashed I never heard from him again. He missed hearings, refused to return calls, didn't file motions that were due, didn't respond to motions. You name it.

He puts on a great dog & pony show when you show up as a new client to interview him. That is literally the only time he will work on your case. You don't matter to him. The one time I actually got Josh on the phone he was combative & rude and told me that if I wanted to actually speak to him instead of his admin assistant the rate would be higher.

Con artist - beware!

The initial consult until your check cashes is the only time Josh will do anything. I hired Josh for my divorce. Required a protection from abuse order to throw my abusive spouse out. In my consult he told me he'd handle everything for the protection order.

After cashing my $4,000 check it was like pulling teeth. I finally had to file the protection order, alone, pro se because Josh couldn't figure out how to do it.

Josh then told me if I wanted to actually speak to him instead of his paralegal then the price would be higher & to quit calling him. He came very late to one hearing, completely missed the second hearing....

Want to know the real kicker?!

When I fired Josh after 2 months of botching every single thing imaginable he had still not yet entered his appearance in the protection order. I was still pro se, although he did enter his appearance for my divorce. The divorce hadn't even begun yet, but Josh refused to refund any of my $4,000 even though - in total - he did less than 2 hours of actual work of which 1 hour was a phone call with me.

Dont Use Them Rude and Never call with updates almost a year in a divorce and nothings been done but very little They Take Your Money and run and lie after lie or exusses after exsusse ! i Say better off with a 99.00 divorce online ! DO NOT USE THEM ! RUDE AND NEVER CALL BACK NEVER THEN GET RUDE IF YOU CALL THEM B ACK

Wasn't on time for 1st hearing and unprepared for court

i needed an attorney to represent me for a modification. the ex-wife attorney won the first divorce trial by working with my attorney Kelly Wulff and got her to work for the ex-wife. she never introduced my evidence. at this last trial Mr. Mathews was fast at correcting the ex- wife attorney with facts. Mr Mathews was a straight talker to me and he did his homework and won my case for me. out of all the attorneys in Missouri Mr Mathews is the best. his staff is very good and very helpfull.

Please trust these bad reviews they are telling you the truth I hired Mathews for a restraining order in Missouri and a custody case in Kansas. He did not show up to court for either case, always had a excuse and said he would call the judge. I lost $1800 for trusting this guy to help me get my son back.

Don't bother with this group, Joshua Mathews will take your money and do absolutely NOTHING! He will tell you what you wanna hear, but in all reality, he could care less about his clients. I've never met a group of rude, irresponsible and sarcastic "professional" people before and I will NOT EVER recommend this firm to anyone. You would be better off having your dog represent you.

Mr. Jashua Mathews is highly recommended! I won my case in no time, although when I had my initial consultation appointment( free), Josh assured me that I will have no worries and that I should feel at ease in winning my case, but I had my doubts. He is a professional, smart, agressive when necessary and competent lawyer.

The Mathews group help me

I hired Josh Mathews to handle our very emotional divorce. I was in a terrible financial situation and our case went longer than expected. Even though I had used up the time I had paid for, Josh had compassion on me and stuck with me til the end. He answered my questions, explained things I didn't understand, even emailing after hours. His paralegal, Michelle, is the best. Always friendly, dependable and efficient. She always made me feel so welcome. Lawyers don't always say what you want to hear, but he was honest and upfront with me about my situation so I would know what to expect. I would recommend Josh Mathews to anyone in need of a divorce lawyer.

The only reason I used them a second time is because I didn't think they could screw up a simple termination of child support that was agreed to by both me and my ex (one kid moved out of his house in June of 2014 and the other turned 21 in January 2015). I paid the Mathews Group at the end of July 2014 and I still don't have an order terminating child support. I have paid over $2500 in child support to my ex since January for a 21 yr old and for a child who doesn't live with him and I've been told I can't recover that money.

PLEASE SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!! LOOK elsewhere for any type of legal help. We would have been better off representing ourselves. The first meeting we shelled out $3000 to Mr Mathews for help in getting visitation rights to my step daughter. We filled out all the necessary paperworks and signed the contract hoping to end this issue as soon as possible. It took over 6 months for The Mathews Group to even start on our case. I would send countless emails and make phone calls asking about the status of our case. They later informed me that Bret Davis would now be taking care of our case. After this they informed us we finally had a court date but since the case was taking alot longer than expected they needed $2000 more dollars for further representation. We continued with them only because we had very little time before court to start all the way over again. Bret Davis did nothing for us in court, He literally looked like a deer in the head lights when the judge was questioning him. He agreed with everything that my husbands ex's lawyer demanded. My husband only was allowed an hour of supervised visitation thru a court appointed center. We then requested he file for another hearing after the center clearly stated they see no reason for further supervision.( mind you we had to also pay for the visits at the center) After about a year we finally got yet another court date. This time the secretary said Bret wouldn't be able to make the court due to family vacation out of town. (how nice right!) and they would send a paralegal to assist. (Even Better).. Court date came and surprise Bret was there. At this court, yet again we did not get visitation rights. We had to pay a court appointed advisor $500 to check our home if it was safe for a 12 year old. This was again Mr Davis agreeing to all the conditions of the opposing counsel. Our side was never heard or explained to the judge. Next court date, Husband gets non supervised visits only on Sundays from 1PM to 6:30PM.. How considerate of them, i know! We thought this matter would be resolved in about 6 months at the most. Its been about 2 years. PLEASE find another firm and don't waste your money. We have yet another court date coming up and will be investing in another lawyer. Lesson learned.

Do NOT use! I have been switched lawyers 3 times in the past 2 years. All I needed to do was update a parenting plan which both parties agreed on and its still not closed. I cant open a new case until this one is resolved and they wont ever call me back to close it! It is SO FRUSTRATING. $2500 gone.

I cannot even begin to explain my great disappointment in Joshua Mathews as our attorney after our daughter's suicide in 2010. He met with us at Christmas time. Took our money. Gave us his card and said "call anytime". What a lie! I was suffering greatly with the loss of our daughter and her son, my grandson and Mathews would never return phone calls and rarely respond to emails. We hired him to get "Grandparent Visitation" rights and to get the money my daughter left to me. He did the minimum on both issues. My daughter, Jennifer Morgan was the biological mother of Owen Bright. Natalie Bright adopted him in Missouri which is questionable. Bright sued me to get all of my daughter's money. Since I and Owen Bright were the only two people named as beneficiaries, Mathews assured me I would get the money. That did not happen. We fired Mathews after almost 3 years and hired another law firm equally as bad. We lost.

I was highly disappointed with The Mathews Group, LC. They continually changed lawyers on us without telling us. Every time we went to talk to someone, the lawyer we had last, had left the firm and they assigned us someone else that we had never heard of and knew nothing about. The person they assigned us knew absolutely nothing about our case or even who we were. In the time we worked with them, about a year, we must have had 5 different lawyers. The last one we met at the court on our court date. He didn't know who we were or even why we were there. I suppose the only good things was that someone bothered to show up.

Bret has been great so far. Yes they can be hard to reach sometimes but all attorney's are. You can always talk with someone in the office.

The Mathews group is a scam. They use the flat rate system, so once you sign the contract, they have no incentive to help any further. When I first called about their services, I talked to Mr. Mathews within 5 min and met with him that same day for about an hour, which was mostly him selling himself and telling me what I wanted to hear. We barely went over the case and he said he would cover that more once I signed the contract and paid him. The following day I signed the contract and paid him in full, and that's when things completely changed.

Upon signing the contract and paying him, I was unable to schedule a meeting or phone conversation with him at all prior to my court date. It wasn't until several phone calls and me asking his assistant if this is normal not to meet with a client before court did I finally get through to him. When I did get through to him he was rude and condescending, and told me I only had 5 minutes. He stated that my court date was a preliminary hearing, so we didn't need to get into the details, which was unfortunately this was not true since there was only one court hearing. He was supposed to meet me early the day of our hearing, but he showed up late to court, had nothing to contribute since he didn't ever meet/spoke with me to prepare for court, and did not even bring the documents I had provided his office regarding my financial records at his assistant's request. I was essentially representing myself during the divorce hearing. Thankfully the judge did seem make a reasonable decision regardless, given that I had absolutely no true legal counseling or representation. My ex told me her lawyer had even commented afterwards how unprepared Mr. Mathews was.

After court, he did not communicate the next steps. I found out via my ex it had taken him over 2 months to get the paperwork in to the court and her attorney had to press the court to get him to fill it out. When I started received bills from the court, I called the court directly and they said my attorney was supposed to go over it with me. When I told them my troubles, they encouraged me to write my complaint to the board since he had failed at his obligation. The few times I did talk with him afterwards about these troubles, he was very rude and told me he didn't have time.

In summary, the Mathews group is really good at getting you to sign their contract for their flat-rate services, but after that, they have no incentive to do the very bare minimum (or less) and made absolutely no effort to assist in the proceedings. I really felt scammed that after I paid him thousands of dollars. He essentially did nothing but collect a check.
