Subsequent to this meeting I responded to the firms' request for information of my financial assets. That request was dated September 21, 2018. The process was completed October 26, 2018 after two packages of documentation was sent to the firm. I then waited.
Over the next year I sent every notice I received from the IRS to Travis Watkins. I emailed the firm and called several times in order to get some sort of update regarding my penalty abatement for 2013. I never received any response from the firm except for solicitations for additional filing and bookkeeping services. They also asked for the extension I had filed for 2018 which was promptly sent to them.
In November 2019 I received notice from the IRS that they can levy my accounts at any time. I made a concerted attempt to contact Travis Watkins and I was successful in contacting the Enrolled Agent I had spoken to in my initial meeting. He informed me that the firm attempted an abatement but because there was no filing for 2018, that abatement was turned down. I informed him about the extension and that the actual return was filed. He said that because it was a paper return it sometimes takes six weeks to process. If I wanted the firm to work further on the case I would have to pay an additional fee. I did and signed a new agreement with the firm. And I waited.
On January 6, 2020 I received another request for information from the firm. On that same day I looked at my bank account and saw that the IRS had placed a levy on my assets. I called the firm and found out that there was an attorney who "is responsible for my case." I asked to speak with her and was told it would take six days until I could speak with her. I've hired many attorneys in the past and that is singular in my experience. I also called the IRS and they informed me that the firm had not contacted them since October 2018.
Today I spoke with the attorney. She informed me that they sent an abatement package to IRS for 2014. I was astonished as my Agreement clearly indicated "2013 only." Bear in mind that at no time was I contacted by the firm, in any meaningful way, regarding the services for which I had engaged them. The attorney apologized for not informing me that "people involved resigned from us" but nothing else. In fact, I was told "you're beating a dead horse" when I asked about the abatement being sent in for 2014 and not 2013. I was told to "make a decision today. Send in the information and go forward or end our relationship with you." I chose the latter.
In my opinion, this firm did not engage in proper practice. They did not advise me of any problems submitting an abatement request for 2013. They went out of the scope of our Agreement in submitting an abatement request for 2014- a year that was over and done with. I didn't want an abatement for anything in 2014. Travis Watkins never responded in any significant way to my requests for information from September 2018 to November 2019. This caused me to incur additional penalties for my 2013 year as I thought that Travis Watkins had this matter in hand and was working on abating 2013.
I'm sure there are other clients out there with different outcomes than mine. I can only assume that the firm kept on top of their cases. They did not, in my view, do the diligence expected of an attorney, in mine.
They rope you into feeling helpless!! Almost 20k and they met with us once and didn’t save us a dime.
Don’t waste your money!!!
18 months later, the IRS informs me that my latest tax refund was put towards an amount owed from 2005. And then sent a bill for several hundred thousand dollars as if I had never even had a successful Offer In Compromise.
I immediately called the Watkins firm. They told me their computers were down. Really? But that someone would call me back immediately. No one ever did. I called the following week and instead of being able to ask questions, I was told to make an appointment for later in the week. What a waste of my time. The representative I met with in some sort of odd office-sharing office space was familiar with the basics of my case. Before I could ask questions, get advice, or discuss; he informed me that he would give me a great deal on their help. He wanted me to pay another $3,500 just to look into this. Nothing has changed since the OIC was accepted, formalized, and implemented. This was my first tax return and I have not been notiifed of anything from the IRS.
I had expected Watkins to take care of their customer and stand by their work. They were not even interested in doing an inquiry to see what the problem was and offered no solutions.... only pay $3,500 and we can help you.
I was disgusted and walked away. After tens of thousands of dollars, three years of stress, hell, and horrible experiences, I am back to square one without anyone to help me. I suggest that you avoid Travis Watkins firm. You can do a lot of this work on your own or find reputable firms that will help you, stand by their work, and make things right; not just when they want to, but also when they need to.
