While some of the other well known firms in the area were not giving us wise guidance, trying to scare us, and only to look into case after opening an "open tab" with them. As a first generation immigrant going through the cycle of student visa / work visa / residency, I have worked with more than half a dozen immigration law practices in several parts of the country. I have realized that you should pick a lawyer to represent you very carefully. The choice of lawyer can make or break your case. Some of my previous (negative) experiences with lawyers have been:

- One lawyer began and ended the conversation with money, and didn't seem to be interested in much else.

- One firm charged me for a consult and then kept looking at the clock every couple of minutes and gave the impression they couldn't care less about my case.

- One leading DFW lawyer wanted to charge me several thousands to file paperwork under a law I wasn't aware of. When I asked for documentation of this law, I was given a copy of something seemingly irrelevant from a law text book. When I said I didn't quite understand, I was told that that was why she want to law school and it was beyond me to understand.

- One law firm sent me an invoice for $97 for photocopying charges, after having received all their other fee in full.

After all these experiences, I decided that I would be very picky about the next lawyer I worked with. My two biggest criteria were: they had to be very competent, and they had to have empathy. I think I have found the lawyer that meets these requirements: The Ahluwalia Law Office. I went to Pallavi during the most stressful time of my life seeking her guidance and representation to respond to an RFE from USCIS and also file AC21 with regards to my employment based I-485 application. I was simply amazed by the customer empathy, integrity, and outstanding support I received from Pallavi and each and every member of her staff.

I was going through hell during that time with home purchase in pending (where 99% of the banks don't understand what an EAD status is and refuse to give me a loan, though I am well qualified financially), duplicate RFEs from USCIS where we had to respond to every one of them though they were duplicates, recent employer change, and my date being current for adjustment of status.
