At 51 years old, with no previous record at all, I found myself falsely accused of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon by a family member in my own home who admits she has no recollection of such event. The police were called and I found myself being arrested in a short, sheer nightgown, charged with felony elder abuse and felony assault with a deadly weapon. I felt like I was in the most nightmarish Twilight Zone that ever existed. Here I was, a former college instructor with a graduate degree, in a jail cell for something I offered to take any polygraph so I could somehow prove I was innocentof the crimes I was charged with. Fortunately, the family member who accused me of said crimes bailed me out of jail after about 5 hours. For a week I was in a fog and I stupidly, having never needed a criminal defense attorney before, hired the first lawyer recommended to me. He was a very nice man, but did nothing for me, and was no match for the prosecutor and judge, who were obviously out for my blood and wanted to put me in state prison for 4 years if they could. This lawyer I hired had a horrible relationship with the prosecutor and I saw he was leading me straight into a trial which I did NOT want. So I started to do some serious research and reached out to several criminal defense attorneys. After thoroughly researching Michael Kraut, I called him and was extremely surprisely but very pleased that he answered the phone himself. Within 24 hours I was in his office explaining the facts of my case. Fortunately, Mr. Kraut agreed to take on my complex, complicated case. I hired him on the spot. Please be advised: Michael is a kind and caring man, but when he agrees to take your case, all he wants are the facts without unnecessary emotional elaboration. Do not take this personally. Mr. Kraut is a no-nonse, aggressive, blunt, hard-working attorney who will work as hard as he can on your case. He always responded to my concerns in my emails, even if his responses were short. He gladly met with me in person to go over my concerns of prosecutorial bias.In my case, he attempted to get a brand- new bill former Governor Brown passed last June of 2018 called a Mental Health Diversion. He subpoenaed my psychiatrist and all of my records and put her on the stand to testify that in 9 years of treating me for depression she has NEVER known me to be a violent person. Mr. Kraut also implored the judge to lift the restraining order that had been placed on me for almost 5 months. It was simply my bad luck to get a prosecutor who had had an unfortunate past with defendants who had done some horrific things on her watch and she is obviously scared I will commit a violent act as well. So I was in essensce being punished because the prosecutor was afraid I would commit a similar crime. Although the judge refused to grant the Mental Health Diversion (no surprise there as it is such a new bill) I consider myself so LUCKY and blessed that I had Mr. Kraut as my attorney. He was a former prosecutor for 14 years and knows how the prosecutors think and act and he has a good relationship with the prosecutor and judge and he THANKFULLY got my two felonies reduced to one midesmeanor for elder abuse, which can and WILL BE EXPUNGED FROM MY RECORD after three years’ probation and anger management classes. Considering the fact that the prosecutor would have been much happier to see me go to state prison, I feel fortunate that Mr. Kraut talked some sense into the judge and prosecutor and got me a deal that after successfully completing my probation, I can get my misdemeanor expunged will and I will have the clean record I deserve. I found myself in the unfortunate situation of being charged with a felony offence my first night in LA travelling from overseas. The whole ordeal was frightening to say the least. I went to many different lawyers who all told me many different things, which left me confused and unsure.

When I spoke to Mike he told me firstly that all of the suggested plans of action the other lawyers had suggested could be done, but why not try to get the case rejected before it went to a hearing. Not one lawyer I had spoken to mentioned that.

We hire Michael for a battery case since our last attorney was not doing anything for us, Michael was fast responding, meeting us the next day, explained to us all the possibilities and our options with the case, we retained him on the same day, he is on fixed fee instead of hourly rate, I think this is better since hourly rate is uncertainty and could be a lot more expensive at the end. I'll say this - Michael Kraut did not physically show up for us in court... but that wasn't an issue for me. They were informative with me and let me know what happened on the days that they showed up on my behalf and even on the days we did meet - they were always courteous. The attorneys are very unprofessional and only care about your money. They will take your case regardless if they are able to win the case for you. When I called to make an appointment, Michael asked me which court I was going to and he turned around and said that he knows a lot of judges there and to bring the money to his office and he will take care of it. If you’re looking for someone that is going to fight for you and have your best interest DON’TT use this law firm. They are hard to get a hold of, they always brush you off and contact you last minute. A couple of days before my court date they called me into the office and said that the case is settled with the witness and that I don’t need to show up at court. Next thing I know they’re calling me the night before the court date and saying that I need to go to court. I ended up dropping them as an attorney and retaining a new one. Basically, the attorneys here don’t fight for you. They only take your money and brain wash you into thinking that they can help you fight your case.

Extremely over charged and didn’t help out with my case. Took my hard earned money ($8,500) plus interest. Kraut didn’t represent me in any of my court dates. He Had a scruffy looking lawyer in his law firm deal with my case. I thought Mr. Kraut was going to represent me because that was the initial deal when I signed the paperwork. I highly suggest not to use this law firm because of the price, lack of communication, & lack of professionalism. It is petty theft and it is misdemeanor.
For immigrant it is crucial, because one can loose his chance to become a US Citizen.
Besides I could spend 6 months in the jail.

During the end of December 2017, I left a party after having a few drinks, and ended up in a bad car accident. Life was going good, I had three girls and was six months pregnant with my first little boy. All that changed in August of 2014 when various police agencies came into our place of business, guns drawn and pounding on the doors. Before I knew what was happening my husband was arrested and I was left there not knowing what to do. In an instance my world had been turned upside down and I was faced with having to figure out how to put the pieces back together.

Fortunately we were referred to Michael Kraut so my husband and I made an appointment to see him immediately. Walking into his office I was a nervous and hormonal wreck, everything felt like it was slowly disappearing. The business that my husband and I had built over the past ten years was in jeopardy and the stress was taking its toll on me and the baby. Our family grew and I delivered a healthy baby boy in November. In May we were in the middle of our second trial when my six month old son had an accident that resulted in a head injury. This man is the epitome of a sleaze ball lawyer. He hard sold me and pressured me into paying an extremely high retainer.

I'm ashamed to say that my head was spinning from being arrested and spending a night in jail and I stupidly took the bait on his lame 'I was a former DA' sales pitch.



And of course once he had his money all our communication was short, condescending and rude, and I have since found that's how he treats many of his other clients. My advice is to go with ANY OTHER LAWYER IN TOWN. I'm sure your chances, your experience and your money will be better off.



Needless to say I've been screwed over pretty bad from my whole situation. I lost the money on my car purchase, I lost the bail money but what was most upsetting in my ordeal was Michael Kraut's behavior and disregard for his profession. I turned to legal council in a time of need and he wound up taking me for more money then the person who sold me the stolen car on Craigslist. He misrepresented the scope of my case in his office, preyed on me, exploited my situation and took advantage of my fearful state of mind.  



A part of me feels bad for him. His life's work seems to be defending drunk drivers and ripping honest good people off. I wouldn't want that for all the money in Los Angeles.
